San Miguel is famous for two things. The first is a crisp, dry refreshing beer, which we are particularly fond of. It makes us feel like we’re on holiday in Mexico every time a drop touches our tongue.
The second is the annual bull run, which is modelled on Spain’s famous Pamplona.
The Sanmiguelada, which kicked off in 1973, sees the streets of San Miguel flooded with red-shirted men desperate to show their machismo.
Irate bulls are let loose on the brave (or should that be foolish) contestants, who number in their thousands. The bulls have just one hour to take out their frustrations on as many people as they can.
Understandably, the warnings that go hand in hand with this event are enough to put anyone off going altogether. But as well as the bull run, the town erupts into one of the biggest street parties we’ve ever been too – and San Miguel isn’t the largest of places.
Running with the bulls will keep you occupied for an hour (if you’re interested), but the music and partying go on for three solid days. So get your glad rags out and get yourself on a holiday to Mexico.
