Mexico is a hang-out for some of the most legendary surfers in the world, and travelling down the west coast you’ll soon see why.
There are loads of great spots to wax down your board as the sun comes up and dive into the swell before the small towns you’ve travelled through even start to come alive.
We love heading out early to ride some big waves before the beaches fill up with tourists (who are never afraid to laugh when you bail spectacularly).
Los Pinos, Pascuales and La Ticla are just three of the many spectacular stretches of beach that offer up great surf.

head to mexico's west coast for top class surfing
And how could we forget Islas de Todos Santos, which consistently throws up some of North America’s (and the world’s) biggest waves.
But be warned. Riding the waves of Mexico’s west coast can be a heart-in-mouth experience, which is why we recommend heading to a surf school so you can get to grips with the basics before you’re thrown in at the deep end.
And you don’t have to travel half way around the globe to learn how to board properly, a surfing surfing holiday in Lanzarote could do the trick.
