There’s a fascinating exhibition opening at the British Museum this week which we’re not going to miss. It looks at the tumultuous history of Mexico – something that we fell in love with the first time we set foot in the country – and promises to re-examine the life of Montezuma, the last ruler of the doomed Aztecs.
Montezuma ruled the ancient empire from 1502 to 1520, and let the Spanish conquistadors into its capital unaware of their plans to murder him and subjugate his people.
Hernando Cortes, who overthrew the Aztecs, destroyed the capital and founded what was to become Mexico City.
But now, the British Museum wants to sweep away the historical rumours surrounding Montezuma – many of which are believed to be Spanish in origin.
We reckon the exhibition will shine a light on the most interesting (and violent) period of Mexican history, but unfortunately it won’t be a patch on taking a holiday to Mexico and experiencing it firsthand.
But, the new exhibition will be an ideal taster if you are planning a trip to Mexico.
