Being woken up by the sound of whales? Is that possible? Yep – without a doubt one of our favourite and most unique alarm calls can be heard on the Valdes Peninsula in Argentina. Between June and December this gem on the Patagonian Coast becomes a breading ground for the majestic Southern right whale and holing up on the coast here means swapping alarm bells for the water blasts of surfacing whales.

3. deafening sound of silence, antarctica
The sound of silence isn’t an easy thing to come across on this planet of ours. Always a whistling wind here and a bird chirping there, but waking up on a crisp still day on the vast plains and serene landscapes of Antarctica the sound of utter silence can be deafening (in a good way of course) and a completely life-changing experience.

Prayer flags fluttering furiously, the sound of prayer wheels being turned continuously and best of all, the sound of young monks laughing. Far from the perception of Bhutan as a sombre land filled with a low drone of old chanting monks, waking up around the monasteries high in the Himalaya’s has to be (and not to get all hippy on you now) one of the most enlightening and calming ways to begin any day, anywhere.

Early morning church bells chiming out may remind you of a local village wedding, but heading off for a morning of exploration in the colourful, colonial town of Granada in Nicaragua to these well orchestrated sounds of the church has influence to take you back in time to the colonial era and the intoxicating days of Spanish rule.

Dozens of loudspeakers blaring out eerie, compelling prayers almost completely unfamiliar to western ears might not sound like the perfect wake up call at the crack of dawn. But trust us, a reminder like this in the morning has to be the perfect way to inspire you to get yourself up and ready to explore a culture completely different to what we’re used to.

10. purring boats pulling into panarea
When staying on the exclusive island of Panarea in the Aeolian Islands it’s not exactly hard to wake of up with a grin on your face. But to wake with the quaint sound of a small boat purring into the delectable white-washed port of San Pietro and its sun-kissed coves, you quickly realise that this island is known as the “la dolce” (the sweet one) for good reason.
