When in Caesarea you’ll find yourself surrounded by the magnificent ancient ruins built by Herod the Great, not just on land, but also underwater. Don your wet suit and dive into one of the most intriguing museums where you’ll be able to float up close and personal to the untouched remains of Herod’s harbour.
It took archaeologists nearly three decades to excavate the harbour and what they found was a modern port for its time making other ports such as Rome, Alexandria and Piraeus, look small and out-of-date.
Suitable for the beginner and experienced diver, you have a choice of four trails that together cover a distance of 87,000 sq yards. Don’t worry if you’re under water navigation isn’t up to scrathc because each site is posted with a number directing you from one to another. And armed with an underwater-proof map, you can read all about the ruins and admire each one in pure silence (well, apart from sound of your bubbles). And for you non-divers out there, don’t get too upset because there’s even a snorkeling trail for you too.
