The four points of the compass, types of landscape, population of penguins: there are various ways of dividing a country into regions. When it comes to Mexico, however, it’s just not that simple. Have a look at our breakdown of this incredibly diverse country below and discover each areas’ highlights at the flick of a mouse.
mexico city

mexico city
Towering skyscrapers, ancient pyramids and old cobblestone streets: Mexico City and the surrounding areas span several centuries for (we think) the perfect combination of old and new. Admire colonial art work in the top class museums, or experience the city’s cutting edge music scene. Party like a local by night and explore Aztec ruins by day. This city never stops revealing new surprises. Have a look at our regional images too.
yucatan peninsula
The Yucatan is much more than the high rises and crowds of Cancun. This peninsula is practically exploding with tropical wildlife beyond the picture-perfect beaches. Don a snorkel and explore the world’s second largest coral reef, and enormous underwater cave systems found below the surface of the unique cenotes (rocky sinkholes filled with rain). Watch out for pink flamingos in bustling nature reserves and swim with whale sharks on Isla Holbox. Paradise.
oaxaca
Step back in time, 400 years, or 4000 years in this historic state: perfect for strolling down cobblestone streets, staying in colonial haciendas and exploring gigantic ancient ceremonial sites. On November 1st, see the ghoulish Day of the Dead festival, and in July watch the traditional harvest dances. No visit to Oaxaca is complete until you sample the famous local food at a traditional market. Toasted grasshopper anyone? Head over on our Oaxaca experience.
central highlands
Known as the ‘Cradle of Independence,’ we love this region for a taste of the hidden side of Mexico. From ancient pyramids and pre-colonial silver mines, to modern surrealist gardens: the central highlands embrace the entire span of Mexican history. So after the beach, head inland for a wild west experience you won’t forget. Have a look here at our images, and our central highlands experience.
sea of cortes
With a reputation as the greatest aquarium in the world, there’s not much more to say, except that we love this watery wilderness, and so will you. With hundreds of unique species (think whales, sharks, seals, birds and fish) this really is a tropical paradise. Sun yourself on the pristine beaches, swim with the fishes and the whales, or relax on a luxury yacht in an area we think of as the Galapagos of Central America. Want to set sail? Have a look at our Sea of Cortes experience.
mayan riviera
Who would have thought that what was once an important centre for trading and religion, would become the destination for white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Our recommended Mexican region for total indulgence, some of the old Mayan culture even remains (Temazcal steam spa treatment anyone?). So grab your swim gear and get away from your daily grind. Bliss. Have a look at our idyllic experience on the Mayan riviera.
