If you’re the kind of person who has to be out discovering new things on your trips abroad, then you just have to visit Costa Rica.
We were just stunned by the country’s biodiversity the first time we headed there, with an array of fantastic habitats just waiting to be found – and it really feels like you’re discovering them for the first time, such is their unspoilt beauty.
For a start, there are more than 100 volcanoes in Costa Rica, although only five are classed as active. The best one is probably Arenal – it has a perfect cone shape and spews hot gases and steam out regularly for visitors to ooh and aah at.

The cloud forests are also something else – try and imagine how the earth may have looked when the dinosaurs were still prowling and you’re on the right lines. We just loved the sultry beauty of the Monteverde forests, which were bursting with plants and animals.
And apparently, we didn’t see the half of it – there are reportedly 400 types of birds and over 100 species of mammals in the misty forests, including toucanets, jaguars and monkeys, as well as the elusive golden toad, which can only be found in this area of Costa Rica.
