Mention the word Sarajevo and what springs to
mind? More often than not, memories of
a war-torn past. Understandable? Yes.
True for now? No. Here is a city that
has risen from the ashes and is being restored to its former glory. And we're
not surprised. Truly diverse culture
coupled with a beautiful mountainous backdrop makes Sarajevo the perfect city
of exploration for the intrepid traveller. This isn't about luxury; it's about
really getting under the skin of a place. Something we love to do.
Nestled in a valley, surrounded by rugged hills and home to rivers, lakes and
springs, Sarajevo has quickly emerged as the perfect European getaway for those
looking for a mixture of activity and discovery. Much of the landscape is
covered with lush forest, and ecotourism has become all the rage with river
rafting, walking, mountain climbing and paragliding high on the agenda.
For those looking for a city vibe, you'll find it. Sarajevo's fascinating
history has culminated in a heady mix of contradictory styles and buildings.
Home to many different religions, it is the only city where you'll find
mosques, synagogues and churches all within walking distance of each other. We
love the Turkish Quarter (Bascarsija)
- a cobbled labyrinth of side streets, which is by far the most enchanting part
of the city. Packed with pastry shops, cafes and bars, this is the place to
hang out with the locals drinking coffee served with sweet Turkish delight.
Even more fun is getting lost amongst the many handicraft shops and stalls
brimming with an array of authentic handmade goods. Look for ancient silks and carpets, leather, gold, silver and
numerous copperware.
At night experience the buzz of the city as the streets and bars come alive. Head
to the Park Princeva restaurant situated on the top of the hill overlooking the
old town. It has a great atmosphere with live music and a laid back vibe. You
just can't beat sampling local Bosnian cuisine (delicious soups, stuffed
leaves, hearty stews and grilled meats) whilst admiring the breathtaking views
over a place that 5 years ago seemed so completely inaccessible. A pretty incredible experience.
Sarajevo, now a truly rising phoenix, is a place where you can immerse yourself
in the local life and culture. A trip to this intriguing city is an absolute
must.
