These were formerly the tops of hills which, when the valleys were flooded for the canal, became islets in the middle of the canal. Even better, you can hire beach houses (that were built by the Americans in the 1930s) on the islands for a barbeque and lazy day having drinks and taking in the stunning views of the luscious canal before being picked up by boat and returned to the mainland."
