Solar Greenhouses in the Himalayas

Solar Greenhouses in the Himalayas

Method of offsetting your emissions

We are sponsoring a project that aims to offset carbon emissions by reducing the need for vegetables to be flown in from elsewhere in India through the construction of solar greenhouses.

Where?

Ladakh, a region in the Himalayan part of Northern India.

Solar Greenhouses in the Himalayas

Why?

The magnificent scenery of the Himalayas, dominated by soaring heights and icy mountain peaks, never fails to take our breath away. Sadly, it is one of the environments that is likely to suffer sooner rather than later as a result of climate change. We want to try and ensure that this threat does not become a reality. Our project in Ladakh aims to reduce the number of flights in and out of the region for this reason.

The population in the high-seated and cold Indian Himalayas live under extremely hard conditions. The vegetation period only lasts three months and the agricultural area is very small. For this reason, subsistence farming is geared towards cereal production, which barely provides enough nourishment for the long winter. Ladakh can only be reached by road for a short length of time during the year, as the passes are usually blocked by snow. As a result, many foodstuffs have to be flown in by air.

How?

500 solar greenhouses are being constructed so that vegetables can be locally grown and no longer need to be flown in from miles away, which, in turn, greatly contributes towards climate protection.

Local Community Impact

This project provides the local community not only with food security for itself, but also the opportunity to extend the vegetation period, and generate a form of income through the sale of vegetables on the market. Through the provision of a sustainable income, individuals within the community will be able to improve their living conditions.

How can I offset?

When you book your trip, please let your Black Tomato travel consultant know that you would like to offset, and they will calculate for you how much it will cost.

Witnessing it for yourself

My Climate

Sometimes actions speak louder than words, and since we want you to see for yourselves how much of a positive impact this project is having locally, each year we will randomly select a client to send on a 'Green Check Mission' to Ladakh.

All you have to do for the chance to go on one of our 'Green Check Missions' is to offset your carbon when you travel with us.

We are happy to be investing in projects run by our friends at myclimate
