Wind power in Madagascar

Wind power in Madagascar

Method of offsetting your emissions

We are sponsoring a project that aims to offset carbon emissions by replacing traditional energy sources with renewable and carbon-neutral alternatives.

Where?

Antsiranana, a city at the northern tip of Madagascar, and the area surrounding it.

Wind power in Madagascar

Why?

Madagascar is one of our favourite destinations to see nature at its very best; it is home to thousands of species of plant and animal life, of which about 80 percent cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. However, unfortunately in the Antsiranana region, an unstable energy supply, and high oil and electricity prices, have boosted the demand on fuel wood and charcoal. As a result, this has endangered the local forest resources. We want to prevent this threat from worsening, in order that Madagascar continues to thrive as the home to many of nature's wonders.

How?

The project will establish the first wind farm in Madagascar. The wind plant will consist of 6 turbines with a capacity of 200kW each. This means that each turbine will reduce around 350 tonnes of CO2-eq. per annum, leading to an overall emission reduction of 14,700 tonnes of CO2-eq. in the first 7 years.

Local Community Impact

This will provide the local community with a reliable and sustainable energy supply. It will also help to reduce deforestation, to enhance the air and water quality by reducing the dependency on diesel based power generation, and to create jobs for local workers as the turbines are built locally in part.

How can I offset?

When you book your trip, please let your Black Tomato travel consultant know that you would like to offset, and they will calculate for you how much it will cost.

Witnessing it for yourself

My Climate

Sometimes actions speak louder than words, and since we want you to see for yourselves how much of a positive impact this project is having locally, each year we will randomly select a client to send on a 'Green Check Mission' to northern Madagascar. All you have to do for the chance to go on one of our 'Green Check Missions' is to offset your carbon when you travel with us.

We are happy to be investing in projects run by our friends at myclimate
