A hike to Pena Palace

A hike to Pena Palace
Sintra, Portugal

Posted: 27 Feb 2008, Region: Europe

Spending a weekend in Lisbon? If you take one day trip, make it Sintra. This ethereal and somewhat spooky town used to serve as the summer retreat for Portugese royalty (and those wealthy enough to follow). The lush hills are dotted with vast, otherworldly palaces and breathtaking follies. Our tip is to walk up the hill to the Pena Palace, which is possibly the most breathtaking of them all. Be sure to get off the road and stroll through some of the parks dotted along the way that give you a taste of the fantastical wilderness up close. Be warned, this is no Sunday stroll but rather a full on high-energy hike. Believe us, the views (and the palace) are worth it.
