Mayan Resurrection
Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala
Posted: 25 Jun 2008, Region: Central America and the Caribbean
Hunting for eggs not your bag? Then the Easter celebrations of Semana Santa in Guatemala might be right up your street. The beautiful village of Santiago Atitlan sits on the shores of Lake Atitlan, possibly one of the most beautiful lakes in the world (according to Aldous Huxley, at least). The village is particularly notable for its celebrations, where the effigy of the Mayan devil-saint Maximon is ceremoniously paraded around the cobbled streets. The celebrations come to head with the grand procession of the icon of Christ, in a symbolic climax of the religious faith of the community. Simply awe inspiring.
