The Svalbard Archipelago, where there are more polar bears than human beings, is as remote as it gets. Only three of these tiny Norwegian islands in the Arctic Circle are even inhabited - and the best for a remote, indulgent weekend is Spitsbergen. Stay at Basecamp Spitsbergen - more a trapper's cabin than a hotel - with interiors of driftwood, seal skins and slate. In the loft room lounge, a vast glass roof means guests can cosy up with front-row views of the northern lights.
Black Tomato offers long weekends in Spitsbergen from £1,300pp, including flights. (020 7610 9038; www.blacktomato.co.uk)
